Man arrested after elderly woman stabbed on Winnipeg Transit bus

Winnipeg police have arrested a suspect in the stabbing of an elderly woman on a transit bus Sunday.

According to a media release, at around 7:30 p.m. on Monday, an off-duty officer observed a man in the 1800 block of Portage Avenue and recognized him from images the police had distributed of the suspect. The officer called for backup, and the man was subsequently arrested.

It is believed on September 12, at approximately 3:15 p.m., the suspect was already seated on a bus travelling eastbound on Portage Avenue when an elderly female boarded the bus and sat down near him. After the bus travelled a short distance, the 70-year-old victim was stabbed. The driver was alerted to the incident, stopping the bus at Portage Avenue, Fort Street area at which time the suspect exited and fled on foot. Police were contacted.

Officers located a seriously injured woman on the bus. She was taken to hospital in critical condition but was later upgraded to stable.

A 43-year-old man from Winnipeg was arrested and remains in custody.
