Winnipeg police say human remains found near the Red River earlier this month are those of a man who was a suspect in a domestic homicide.

According to a media release, on April 11, police began investigating the death of a woman who had been taken to hospital from a home in the 500 block of Ottawa Avenue.

The deceased woman was identified as Julie Racette, 34-years-old. An investigation determined that she had been the victim of a homicide.

On April 20, police obtained a Canada-wide warrant for the arrest of Wayne Leslie Melnychuk, 42-years-old, for manslaughter.

During the evening of August 7, police responded to the 600 block of Henderson Highway for a report of partial remains that had been discovered on the riverbank.

It was determined that the remains belong to Melnychuk.

Police believe Melnchuk entered the Red River on his own accord on or about April 12.
