A Manitoba prison inmate allegedly slashed the throat of a correctional officer on Wednesday.
According to Correctional Service Canada (CSC), on April 15, at about 6:30 p.m., a staff member was assaulted in the structured intervention unit — an area that houses problematic inmates — at Stony Mountain Institution.
The guard was asking the accused to return to his cell when the inmate suddenly jumped at him, allegedly slashing him across the neck with a homemade knife said the Union of Canadian Correctional Officers.
STARS air ambulance was dispatched and the correctional officer was airlifted to a hospital in Winnipeg.
RCMP immediately responded to the Institution. Once there, police worked with correctional staff to secure the scene and a suspect was identified.
CSC said the appropriate actions have been taken against the accused.
The correctional officer is in stable condition and recovering at home.
RCMP and the institution are investigating the incident.
